The three act structure is used to balance and connect the characters to the plot.

The hook- the hook is used as the first domino of the film and gives the audience a taste of what's to come. Its used to "hook" the audience and keep them interested.

Inciting incident- the inciting incident is used to set the narrative in motion and the characters are usually faced with an option and have to pick a choice

First plot point- the first plot point is usually the first 25% of the film and its useful to transition into the second act. usually in the first plot point the characters are now at the point of no return and there lives have changed and they wont change back or be the same. they are now fully committed and engaged to the story.
