Self evaluation
Before pre production started we were asked to pitch our scripts in a presentation to see whose scripts will be put into production, I felt quite anxious before my presentation so I was unable to present my script idea. I learnt from this as after some reassurance that the class was supportive of other students I feel more confident that ill be able to present next time there is a similar task. At the beginning of the production, we started by getting into groups after choosing what scripts the class wanted made into production. When working in the group we worked well with each other and listened to each others ideas and made sure that everyone was included and was caught up if anyone had missed something or a lesson. When first coming together as a group I felt a bit shy but after a while I felt a lot more comfortable after assigning roles and reading through the script. After getting into groups we did a group read through of the script to see what roles there were to take and so we understood what the short film was going to be about and understand the storyline in detail. Then in our group we decided what roles we wanted to take on by deciding what we feel we work well in and what roles we were comfortable taking and what characters people wanted to act out. I took on the role of camera operator as I enjoy filming and I wanted to get some more practice in to develop my skills with the camera as I feel as I’m quite good at filming, but I would like to become more educated and more practiced. Theo and Bella and Kai were the actors and actress for the short film and Ruby was the director.
We then created our pre-production documents so we could plan out everything before fiming. we created a storyboard to follow so we knew what shot ideas we had and how we wanted the storyline to flow. After creating the storyboards, we created a shot list describing in detail what each shot was going to look like and where they would be taking place. After creating the shot lists and storyboards we knew what locations we were going to be filming in so we created location recces to map out where we need to go and where will be best to film. After production was over, we actually ended up filming in a few different locations to suit the script idea better by filming under the bridge as the short film was based around a dodgy activity, we found a tunnel with graffiti that gave of a good atmosphere for the production. We also created a risk assessment to plan out anything that may go wrong so we knew how to prevent it and how to try and make sure we don’t make any accidents. We also created a call sheet so we could plan out what lessons we were filming in and also checked the weather to make sure we were going to be able to film outdoor scenes safely. On the call sheet we included our contact details so if we had any issues, we could contact each other easily. As the roles had specific needs, we created a costume and props list to plan out what we wanted the characters to wear to suit the needs of the characters and what the directors vision was like.
During filming we came across a few issues as the flow of some things didn’t add up, for example in quite a few scenes Kais character Tom is shown to be wearing gloves but as the scenes go on in some he’s wearing them in others he’s not. We had this issue as we had to refilm some of our shots after we thought we had finished so some of the characters were wearing different clothes in scenes that are meant to be all at the same time of day and place. We had a similar issue when it came to Theos character Robbie as he wore a different coat but luckily the colours were similar so the outcome wasn’t that obvious. As we were filming in a public location, we also had some issues when it came to members of the public passing by so when shooting some of our scenes, we had to allow people to pass, so when we were shooting it took some time as we had to keep stopping and starting. When filming we also came across the issue that some of the shots were blurry due to the fact that the camera wasn’t in focus. We also had some issues when it came to the actors as in a few of the scenes they were looking at the camera in parts that couldnt be edited out as after both reshoot days we realised that in one of the scenes Theo looks straight at the camera so in future projects ill make sure to double check each scene to make sure they are usable toward the final edit. One of the days we were filming I was unable to attend the lesson so I struggled a little bit when it came to catching up and getting access to all of the footage, after some transferring I managed to gain access to the clips and after going through them I managed to point out some of the things that needed re filming like the blurry shots so we did another reshoot so we could get all the final clips we needed.
Once I had uploaded all of the footage for the production I started editing the clips together to fit the storyline, when editing the production I decided to cut out a few scenes as I felt they weren’t fitting to the storyline and they made the production feel worse in my opinion. In the script there was a scene at the beginning where the posh boy (Tom) is walking to college and he gets shouted at from across the road. I decided to keep this scene out as it felt very out of place from the rest of the production when I tried to edit it into the film. Also while editing I had to include three editing techniques, to do this I learnt how to crossover sound from one scene so it begins before you actually see the scene and how to crossover sound from a scene so the sound from the first scene crosses into the next scene, the third one I included was eyeline match as I made sure that the eye level of characters when they were having a conversation by keeping the same height of the scene so the characters were obviously looking at each other. I also included music in the background to improve my edit of my video to intensify certain scenes. I also added bloopers to the edit as it makes the video have some comedic ending as it adds to the short film and shows behind the scenes of creating the production.
Overall the whole outcome and production of posh boy gone bad was a good learning experience for myself as I learnt a lot of new skills and techniques and managed to apply the knowledge I already had and used past mistakes to learn and to see what I could change and do to make the production better than past tasks. I feel as the group worked really well together and we all had fun as well when creating the short film as we all got along well.
