Which scene in the film do you think works best? Which is the most memorable? The best written?
In the film stand by me I think the best scene is where Gordie is crying after finding the body saying to his friend Chris that it should've been him that died instead of his brother because it was very emotional and Gordies dad had always said that real men don't cry and things along that line. The scene shows that Gordie is not afraid to cry and that he is feeling upset and he is allowing himself to feel these emotions and has opened up to his friend about it and his friend is being comforting and reassuring to Gordie that he deserves to be here and that he is a good person. I also think that this scene is the most memorable and best written as they had just discovered the body and it made Gordie reminisce and think about his brother so I think that the scene was made to be the most intense and bring all the unsaid emotions to the surface to show how they all really feel about the situation and how Gordie was upset and feeling guilty that he didn't even cry at his brothers funeral and all his guilt and regret was being shown. His friend comforting him I think really adds to the scene as it shows friendship and how close friends can be and how important they are to have in life. Showing a close and bonded friendship is effective to the scene because it relates to the title of the film "stand by me2 as it shows that they stand by each other and help each other is serious and unserious situations.
The most exciting?
I think the most exciting scene in the film was when they had to walk across the train track along the bridge. As it was really good at building tension as Gordie kept reaching down to touch the railway to see if it was moving and everyone was feeling nervous about going across . Then Gordie reaches down again to check the railway then he turns around to then see a train is coming and he shouts "train" then everyone starts running but one of the characters freezes and refuses to move and it starts building more tension and excitement as the scene builds the tension up will and then when the boy finally decides to get up and start running to try and avoid getting hit by the train and then jumps off of the train track. Then the scene shows that the characters are all okay. I think its really effective as a few of the characters were saying it will be fine before walking across and the others were very hesitant until they were convinced to go across.
How does the film represent men?
Stand by me represents men in a few ways as Gordies dad and other characters put across the idea then real men don't cry and that they should be tough and strong and should hide their emotions. Gordies dad tells him these kind of things but Gordie allows himself to feel these emotions and be upset about things.
Men in stand by me are also shown to be violent as In a scene early on in the film a group of boys/men are shown to be acting reckless as they play a game which involves then hitting mailboxes (mailbox baseball) with a bat whilst in a moving car. This shows that men in the film are a bit aggressive and rude as in another scene the same boys steal Gordies hat off of him and Gordie explains that his brother gave it to him but both of the boys don't care and show no sympathy towards Gordie and then walks off without returning the hat. This shows that these boys in particular are selfish and disrespectful. I think men overall in stand by me has a lot of variety as it depends on age group and character because Gordies friend group is a lot more sympathetic and show their emotions and feelings whilst the older group of friends is more emotionless and does not have much care over other peoples feelings.
