What style of documentary is the above?
I would say it is a participatory documentary as the main character that the documentary is based on (ken bone) is shown to be sitting in front of the camera throughout most of the documentary and is talking to the camera like its another person.
What is the subject matter?
The subject matter is how fast that ken bone became famous basically overnight and then was used to it and how he is now going through withdrawals of it and realising that he peaked at 33 and like he said is now just existing and feels like its worthless as he was waiting for something amazing to happen to him and now he's just stuck with the memory and is now affected by it in his daily life.
What are you connecting with? Is it the character, the subject matter, something else?
I think that the audience connects to it as it creates an emotional response out of the audience. As in my opinion it made me feel sorry for him that he now feels almost worthless and that he's had this amazing thing happen to himself, and had his peak in life and was used to the fame for a while and hearing people chant his name and how he will never have that experience again and be able to have that feeling. At the end he mentioned how he every now again gets some fan mail and try's to respond to all of them. I think hearing someone's story through the way the documentary is set up with him just facing the camera makes it feel like the audience is being spoken to directly and causes a connection as the audience want to hear more of how he is feeling and learn his life experience.
