Pan-the camera horizontally swivels from a fixed position, right to left or left to right
This camera movement can reveal new information and can also follow characters to see where they are moving to ,they can also be useful to show an environment and follow the characters eyeline to show what they are looking at. Pan can also be referred to as a “whip pan” when the camera whips quickly to another character or object.
Tilt-the camera vertically moves from a fixed position up to down or down to up
This camera movement can help keep the subject in the centre of the frame and the camera follows the action of the person and can also reveal what the character is looking at that previously the audience couldn’t see. A tilt can also choose to focus on something else suggesting to the audience that the object it focuses on is more important than the character. They are also useful for revealing and suggesting the size of something.
Ped-short for pedestal the camera moves up or down whilst still looking forward
This movement is good at revealing a variety of different elements in the same scene and also help reveal more information and normally the ped is carried out slowly so it tends to create a sense of threat by slowly revealing the particular object or character. They can also make people appear taller and therefore more intimidating as they tower over the audience or another character.
Dolly-the camera smoothly moves forwards or backwards
This movement is good at revealing more information about the scene around a character or an object and can also help the audience visualise the size of something and show more visual information. It can also help to suggest to the audience what they should be focusing on.
Track-with this movement the camera moves from side to side but still looks forward
This camera movement can help follow a character and introduce the audience to new information as the character is being introduced to it at the same time. They can also help show the environment around a subject but tracking them at the same time. The camera can also go the same speed that the character or object is moving to help the audience feel as though they are walking with the character.
Zoom-the camera stays still but the camera lens moves closer or further away from the subject
This camera movement can help slowly introduce characters suspense-fully and introduce them to the audience and show them what they should be focusing on. They can also make a person or object take up more or less of the screen. It can also be helpful to reveal information that the audience was unaware was there previously.
Crane-the camera is fixed to a crane and moves around in the air
This camera movement helps show the audience the bigger scene that the audience couldn’t see originally by taking the camera and moving it around to reveal a larger sense of where a character is. It can also help show how small something or someone is compared to another object or character. It can also link one person with another further away place.
Steadicam-the camera will move around in a smooth steady and stable way
This camera movement is good for creating a smooth and steady motion this is done by a camera that is attached to a series of weights and a camera man carries the camera around with them in the scene because the camera operator can take the camera anywhere which helps the audience get a much greater sense of the environment.
Pov-this movement replicates the feeling of being in the position of the character
This camera movement is effective because it can make the audience seen more connected with the characters and make it feel like they are part of the scene and it gives the audience a perspective of looking through the characters eyes
